6 Human Foods That Are Toxic to Cats

Having a pet makes you feel wholesome. But with cats, it’s important to know which human foods are toxic or dangerous. Keep tabs while giving your cats homemade treats, and make sure you do not include the following foods.

Here are the six most toxic foods for cats:

1. Chocolate
If you have a sweet tooth, then the excellent news is your feline cannot share them with you. A substance called theobromine found in chocolates can have adverse effects if ingested. Initially, chocolate can cause vomiting and diarrhea and later cause muscle tremors, seizures, and heart problems. Dark, unsweetened chocolate is the most toxic, and white chocolate is the least dangerous for cats. Another danger is the caffeine it contains.

2. Caffeine
While a hot cup of Joe is perfect to start your day, your cat may not be as refreshed by caffeine as you are. Even in small doses, caffeine from coffee, tea, chocolates, and colas are toxic for kitties. It causes symptoms like restlessness, rapid breathing, tremors, and heart palpitations. In large amounts, caffeine is usually fatal.

3. Alcohol
Still, on the subject of drinks, cats cannot have happy hours. Alcoholic beverages are dangerous for cats and are capable of causing intoxication, coma, and death. As they’re small creatures, even tiny amounts of alcohol can cause coma in felines. Cat’s bodies absorb it very quickly and cause damage to the liver and brain. If you suspect your cat has been poisoned by alcohol, immediately rush to a veterinarian.

4. Onion and garlic
Cooked, roasted, sautéed, dehydrated, powdered, and even raw onions and garlic is a strict no. Members of the allium family, chives and leeks, apart from those mentioned above, are rich in sulfoxides and disulfides, which interfere negatively with a cat’s red blood cells (RBCs). It results in weight loss, lethargy, anemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, the most common signs of onion and garlic poisoning in cats.

5. Bread and yeast
Bread has little to no nutritional value for cats. It is also dangerous on account of the yeast it contains. Raw bread dough is particularly dangerous, as it rises inside the stomach when ingested by cats. Imagine dough rising in your cat’s stomach. There could be very severe consequences like abdominal pain and stretching of the stomach walls. Another threat is fermentation. When yeast ferments, it releases alcohol, which again is harmful to your cat.

6. Raw meat
Since cats are carnivores, you must imagine cats can eat as much meat as they desire and in any form. But, like with people, raw meat and eggs can expose cats to salmonella and E.Coli. Besides, there are enzymes in raw egg whites and fish that prevent the absorption of B vitamins and can cause neurological problems. Fish, in excessive quantities, can also disrupt brain functioning, thanks to its high mercury content. Biotin absorption is also inhibited by contaminated meat, causing skin and hair problems. In severe cases, raw eggs and meat can cause loss of appetite, seizures, and ultimately death.
